Buying Experience with a Franchise

Franchising Basics
There are many individuals who take different routes in their career. Majority would fall into the category employed by either the private or public sector. The rest would go into franchising. This is a big decision entrepreneurs take but one has to prepare when buying franchise because it both has risks and gains, depending on how each step of franchising is handled. Many of franchisees would be the first to tell you that you have to have the passion for the business you went into. However, despite this burning passion, there are still individuals who fail to grow the business because of lack of necessary knowledge about procuring and running a successful franchise. Buying into a franchise can help ease this difficulty since franchisors provide you with an operation proven to work.

Pre-Franchising
Aside from having passion for the type of business or franchise you wish to go into, one needs to ensure that this will be the right fix to your needs and skills. You need to be prepared for the hours of operation, characteristics required of the role, amount of investment and income expectations. Develop your own criteria and match these against several franchising options from various industries and see if it meets your budget allocated to procure the business. The idea is to get you familiarized with business alternatives that will help meet the criteria you have set.

Depending on the franchise you are looking at, one may be able to look up preliminary information about the over the Internet. For small scale franchises, one may need to visit offices of these companies to gather information about it. This helps broaden your options to one type of business across the different scales that can help you find a franchise to fit your budget.

Running the Franchise
After signing the contract, one has to prepare for the costs of running the business which includes among other things, paying for salaries of employees, rental dues and other daily operating expenses. It is important that franchisees prepare for initial and ongoing costs of buying a franchise. The contract outlines all rules and restrictions between franchisor and franchisee which must be followed accordingly. This may include maintaining a presentable and sanitary location with good working conditions. It will be good to size the competition up and see how that would impact your revenue. These are some of the rules so knowing all these upfront can help you prepare for the job ahead.

Buying an Existing Business

Starting with an Existing Business
There are many individuals who would like to be their own boss by opening a business of their own liking. There are several ways to do this and getting there is just a start, although it does not necessarily mean that it will be a walk in the park as many start-ups will realize. This is one of the reasons why there are some who look into buying an existing business primarily because it is considered a fool-proof way of becoming successful at this venture. For obvious reasons, entrepreneurs see this as an opportunity to take on a business that is already thriving and stable so all they need to do is take over and profits pour in. Simple? Not quite.

Research on Best Business for You
Although it is true that there are advantages to buying an existing business, you may find yourself with some concerns too. Primary of these concerns is that cost of buying the business. Because it is already in place, you can expect that owners will put a premium on the cost of buying them out of the business compared to something you built from scratch. The system and secret formula will be transferred to you when you buy it but you will also have to watch out for obsolete systems and inventory or difficult employees. This is the reason that you still need to put as much energy into researching potential business ventures as you would with new businesses. There are no shortcuts to this and you won’t have to start blaming other people’s “poor judgment” that may cost you unnecessary expenses in the long run.

Questions to Answer
One will need to exercise due diligence and although you have a passion for the business, you will also need some experts to help you out with other aspects of the business such as an accountant and lawyer. Both can help you look into books and paperwork to objectively assess the business you’re eyeing to buy. You will wonder why a business is for sale because if it is thriving and has established its own client base, why would the present owner put it up for sale? What is the current situation of the business and how does it look in the future? Is there a solid market to ensure that this business will continue to be profitable or is it just a novelty that may fade? Getting this questions answered will help you decide if you want to look further into it or move on.

The Good and Bad News about Employees

Employee Behavior and Its Business Impacts
Any business will require employees to help get the business going during hours of operations. They are an integral part of the any business and what varies across industries is the headcount it will require to create the product or service being marketed. Hiring the right talent and making sure that they continue to perform at or above expectations is any employers dream as far as this aspect of the business is concerned.

Good News
When you get ideal employees for your business, you can expect the company to run smoothly and with minimal supervision. Generally, these employees are happy or satisfied with the working conditions which can refer to their salary, work location and colleagues and direct managers or supervisors in the company. In addition, they are likely to feel that their job is something that they actually enjoy doing everyday. When you get this type of personnel, the product or service that comes out is usually of good quality that will satisfy your customers. This spells good profit which may allow you to provide bonuses to your team at the same time. The cycle continues but because we’re dealing with human beings, there would be times that circumstances are not as picture perfect as you’d like it to be. That’s when you can start experiencing problems with the business. It is how soon you act to turn things around that can spell the continued success of the business.

When Things Go Sour
What could’ve happened for things to start going down? Employees may be a factor too and you will need to get on top of things quickly to stop the downturn. Although your first impulse may be to talk to an employee directly why their output suffered, you will do better if you ask for feedback from the employee’s direct supervisor first and look at key performance indicators including attendance, quality of work, productivity and error rates. This should give you a more objective idea regarding the struggles of the employee before you take them aside for a meeting.

When you do pull aside the employee, you will need to do it in a neutral and private office so you can talk frankly about the root cause why this employee seems to be struggling with the job. From there, you can recommend additional training, flexibility of work or even time off, if the situation calls for it. Managing people can be tricky but this is one skill you will need to arm yourself with if you want to manage a successful business.

It is important to realize that some parts of going global may be easy while there are other opportunities you may have to let go due to some restrictions to the business. These restrictions vary depending on the extent of moving the market outside the country.

The first consideration when going global is the investment you wish to put in to pursue this option. Like most other expansion plans, one has to be financially prepared to deal with this. One needs to be smart about it too. Unless you are willing to deal with experts who might charge you more for services that you can probably get from less expensive resources, you may be up for extra costs that may be hard to recoup in a short time unlike when you actually know how to look other options that would be less costly for your to invest on.

Going Back to Basics

Similarly, you can’t be everything to everyone so you need to pick your niche because there is likelihood of success if you go this route than otherwise. Since you’ve already decided on a particular market, it is time to move on to market research to explore and identify fast growing market for your business. This research should include looking at how your product will perform in a geographic area and finding cross-border customers. Part of this is creating a professional network who knows the industry more than you do. They can help and give you information that you may not have thought of initially. Exporting strategy and technology will play a role in your international business. Unless you can deal with this, get the help of experts such as lawyer, banker, accountant and transport specialist to help you figure things out.

You Still Need a Retirement fund

Retirement Fund a Must
Financial security is a common concern for many individuals and this is especially important for individuals who have reached retirement age. This should not be taken lightly because medical expenses tend to shoot up as one ages. A retirement fund lets you sit back and enjoy life after working hard for most decades of your early life. Not everyone can be as lucky so starting early with saving for a nest egg should be something you need to track, the same way you would track the money you deposit in the bank.

Kinds of Retirement Plans
Your retirement benefit is tied to the type of retirement your employer has. Generally, there are two kinds of retirement plans – defined contribution and defined benefit. Employers may offer different kinds of plans and participation requirements will also differ for each. Defined contribution has a set amount of money you and the employer needs to contribute regularly. As the main beneficiary, you have control on the amount you wish to deduct from your income and how your contributions are invested. Your retirement plan will depend on the amount contributed and how well your investments perform over time. Some examples of this retirement plan is 401(k) fund, employee stock ownership plan, profit sharing plan and IRA plan.

Defined benefit plan is usually funded by the employer where retirees can expect to receive an amount each month. Depending on the plan, a beneficiary may receive an exact amount or this may be calculated based on age, salary and tenure with the company. An example may be a pension equal to 1% of the employee’s salary multiplied to the years you serve the company.

Be Informed
It is good to reach out to your company human resources department so you can take advantage of this benefit at the soonest opportunity. Review your employee handbook, if you have access to one, so you can see if there is anything else you need to do on your end to increase your benefits. Look at eligibility requirement because part time employees will usually require a minimum number of hours of work annually before one can join and be covered by a retirement plan. For employee stock options, there are enrolment dates you need to remember and if you miss them, you need to wait for the next cycle. Although benefits can be generous, you will also want to check if these might be reduced and under what circumstances. That should get you started to optimize your retirement benefits.

Index for Business
When you are ready to go into business, there are new things you will have to learn to be able to get a better idea about the success rate of your venture. One of the terminologies you will come across is called business index. Simply put, business index will give you an idea on the feasibility of doing business in a particular area. This is directly tied to ten conditions of a particular country where a high business index means that the environment will be conducive for a business operation and the opposite will mean it is more difficult to do business in that location.

Ten Parameters of Business Index
World Bank has created the business index known as Ease of Doing Business Index. There are at least 10 factors to consider when ranking a country. These are categorized as closing a business, starting a business, trading across borders, registering property, protecting investors, paying taxes, employing workers, getting credit, dealing with construction permits, and enforcing contracts. All ten look into a complete life cycle of a business from the time you are in the inception stage up to the time you close the business. Starting a business means dealing with processes, cost, capital and time needed to get the business rolling. Dealing with construction permits tracks processes, costs and time to building a warehouse. This includes obtaining licenses and permits, passing inspections and even hooking up utilities to the warehouse. Under employing workers, there are several subcategories namely ease of hiring workers, rules on work hours, processes for firing workers and the level of difficulty this process involves. The more rigid the regulations, the higher the index for the category of employing workers. The topic on registering properties checks into procedures, cost and time needed for entrepreneurs to purchase a registered property and free of disputes. Getting credit is another category that explores issues on credit registries and legislations relevant to bankruptcy and collateral to facilitate lending. Measures in place are the Credit Information index and Legal Rights Index plus public and private credit coverage.

One more important issue for investors is the category on protecting investors which explores protections for minority shareholders against potential mismanagement of company assets by the executive directors for personal advantage. Paying taxes deals with taxation while trading across borders focuses on import and exporting procedures. Enforcing contracts looks at sales disputes and closing a business is all about the bankruptcy procedures.

Putting Up Your Own Online Business
We have heard of successful online entrepreneurs who are raking in the big bucks without having to leave the comforts of their homes. We have also heard of many land-based businesses who have opted to run their businesses online because it’s cheaper to maintain and yet can reach the market on a global scale.

Unfortunately, there have likewise been online businesses that didn’t do so well, rendering the business owner frustrated and even broke. So before we begin to consider starting up our own online business, we should do a little investigating first.

Online Business Ideas
First of all, what type of online business do you wish to venture into? If you are an avid surfer, you will see that most businesses online have something to do with selling a product or service.

Online shops are sprouting like mushrooms these days; and most of these are run from the owner’s home. You may sell your own products or offer to distribute popular brands in your online shop. Most of these are also quite successful.

Running an internet business that specializes in SEO, writing, web and graphic design may also be a viable avenue that you could explore. There are a lot of companies opting to acquire the services of such companies instead of going with the regular advertising and marketing agencies because such internet businesses charge less.

You may start your online business with just you as the CEO, CFO, staff and all-around personnel and then simply get more people to work with you as your business grows. Make use of the marketing tools available online to advertise your business. Viral marketing has played quite a huge role in the success of many businesses today.

Don’t Quit Your Day Job
Quitting your regular job to start your own internet business may not be a wise move at this point in time, especially with the economy still looking grim these days. Look at your online business as another money-earner that can augment your regular income.

While juggling a day job and an internet business may require a lot of hard work; no business ever really got off ground with the owners just sitting idly by. There’s bound to be chaos in the beginning but once everything is in order and you have started establishing yourself in the internet business field, you may start toying with the idea of quitting your day job.
