Maintaining Quality

Excellence in Quality is the Difference
How many times have you experienced purchasing something that turned out to be a lemon? Worse, when we try to return these items or have them replaced; we are directed to a lousy customer support service that talks in circles, evading the issue of why their product was less than satisfactory.

True, this could happen to anyone; but don’t let this happen to any one of your customers, whatever your business is. Nothing beats excellent quality and in almost all instances, here lies the big difference.

Always Choose Quality Over Quantity
There would be times when we would be tempted to overlook the quality of our products in our effort to produce more; thinking that selling more is all that matters. What we fail to realize is that while we may have sold more, we have also opened up the possibility of returns from unsatisfied customers because of the poor quality of our products.

This is why large corporations usually have a Quality Control Department whose main purpose is to ensure that everything that goes out of production has the same excellent quality that customers expect.

On the other hand, if we are a small business but with quality goods; our competitors’ share of the market may well choose us over them precisely because of the quality of our products.
Typically, small businesses have an edge in this area because small business owners make it their business to not only provide quality goods but also quality client relationship. This personal touch is always appreciated by the market.

Keeping Up with Technology
There are a lot of technological advancements today that can help us maintain the quality of our goods or services. Updated tools and equipment may help us produce even better-quality goods than what we have now, may increase our outputs without sacrificing the quality.

These don’t have to be the latest model but at least these should keep up with the times. This will help us to not fall behind schedule of production, create more efficiency in the workplace and maintain the excellent quality of our goods that our customers have been accustomed to.

In this manner, we may increase the number of clients that we can accommodate regularly which subsequently will increase our profits as well.

But whether we are a small business with only a few hands to help us; or a medium enterprise; the thing to remember is to never sacrifice quality over quantity.

Competition

Why Competition in Business Matters
In any business, competition is one key element that we could use to motivate us to improve our products or services; to check the premises to see where we stand in the market share; to keep up-to-date with the latest technological innovations; and to recognize the road blocks that hinder us from moving forward.

Having competition drives us to be aggressive in our business strategies and advertising to eliminate all possibilities of being engulfed whole by our competitors and lose our standing in the market; whether locally or worldwide. But first, we should be aware of who our competitors are to allow us to move accordingly.

Recognizing Today’s Market
There are several industries today that are thriving, despite the economic turmoil that we all have experienced of late. There are also those that are simply trying to keep afloat, working their way out of the red and into a more positive position in their industry.

Both these scenarios require that we recognize what we are working for and against. Clearly acknowledging the elements that we have to consider in order for us to keep moving forward will help us work on our business plans to eliminate threats to our security.

With the narrowing market share brought on by financial strains, the competition to get a stronghold in the market becomes even more aggressive. Innovative means are necessary and redirection may have to be taken in order to get ahead of our competitors.

Healthy Competition
This being said, being aggressive in our quest to do better does not mean that we have to resort to blatantly lambasting our competitors to get ahead of them. Capitalizing on our strong points instead of openly harping on the weak points of our competition will result in bad blood between us and other businesses in our industry.

Sound business acumen will tell us that creating enemies in our industry is not the way to go especially during these crucial times. Creating a harmonious business relationship with our competitors is essential; to keep the doors open for partnerships in the future.

Competition is always good exercise to keep us on our toes and motivate us to not be complacent. It inspires us to go one step further and to do better than our last winning moment. This will help us maintain our stronghold in the market or to strive further to be one more rung higher that our last position.

Keeping Tabs of Payroll Taxes

Keeping Tabs of Payroll Taxes
Payroll is one of the most important issues everyone deals with whether you’re looking at it as an employer or employee. In addition to this, both also look for payroll taxes with a detailed eye and one should be most careful when calculating them so that the right amount is deducted from the employee’s pay each time. Payroll taxation is required by law and the amount collected should be handed over to government agencies instructed to collect them.

Basics of Payroll Taxes
Payroll taxes include various types of amount withheld including federal income tax withholding, Social Security tax withholding, Medicare tax withholding, state income tax withholding and other local tax withholding such as state unemployment insurance, state disability insurance, school district, county or city taxes. In addition, there is also what is known as voluntary payroll deductions which are withheld from an employee’s gross pay only if they agree to it. These deductions are tied to benefits an employee has participated in. These may be health insurance premiums, life insurance premiums, retirement plan contributions like 401k plans, stock purchase plans and others. Calculating these mandatory and voluntary deductions can be done through payroll software that helps employers track them with accuracy.

Employer Responsibilities
Employer responsibility does not end with calculating payroll taxes. Employers are also tasked to pay their share of the payroll taxes and making sure they are deposited to agencies whenever these amounts are withheld from paychecks of personnel. There are paper works such as reconciliation reports, financial reports which deal with payroll expense accounting and filing the tax returns as they fall due.

Payroll taxes also include a portion shared by employer and this are not deducted from employee’s paychecks but is above their gross pay. It includes taxes on Social Security, Medicare, Federal unemployment and state unemployment. Social Security and Medicare taxes are part of the legislation known as Federal Insurance Contributions Act which mandates that both employer and employee share in paying them regularly in equal amount. When added up, FICA taxes come up to 15.3%.

When filing all these tax payments, each type uses a different form that employers and employee will need to fill up and sign. These forms are Form 940 or 940EZ for the annual federal unemployment tax return, Form 941 for the quarterly returns, Form 945 for annual income taxes and Form W-2 for wage and tax statements. It is complicated in some ways which is why employers will generally get the help of experts such as accountants on these matters.

Accounting Essentials
Accounting has put businesses to a science by keeping score of money that comes in and out of the company. The steps are complicated but it lets an owner quantify his profits and losses with accounting books.

Accounting Steps
There are several activities in the accounting cycle which starts with transactions and wraps up with closing of books. The same steps are taken for reporting periods on a regular basis which makes this an accounting cycle and being able to keep tabs of what occurred from start to end. Accounting of transactions starts with a document such as invoices or purchase orders. The transaction is then categorized and matched with account where it should be credited or debited. It is also necessary that the amount involved in the transaction is specified in exact amounts. The next step is record the transaction using journal entries. These journals may be called a purchase journal, sales journal, disbursement journal or a general journal. As each transaction occurs, they are entered in the journal so everything is jotted down in the right chronological order. These journal entries should be posted on ledger accounts.

End of Accounting Period
The steps outlined earlier are done throughout an accounting period and at the end of this period, there are a few extra steps to follow. One starts with a trial balance where credits are checked against debits to ensure that they are equal. Usually, debits are listed on the left column and credits on the right column. Discrepancies can be corrected at this time and it may be because of errors in posting the right amount, posting twice, posting in the wrong column and so on. After this, one is now ready to start adjusting entries to be able to record deferred, accrued or estimated amounts. These adjusting entries are then posted to ledger accounts. The next step is preparing a trial balance but this time, it includes adjusting entries too. Once errors are corrected on this trial balance, financial statements are then prepared.

After the financial statements are completed, one is ready with closing journal entries. Temporary accounts like expenses, profits and losses are closed to income summary. Closing entries should then be posted to ledger accounts and another trial balance is done, looking at permanent accounts because all temporary accounts had been closed at this point. It is optional to prepare a reverse journal entry which is indicated for accruals or deferrals categorized as adjusting entry and it’s already last day for the accounting period.
